TUM Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering

Technical University of Munich

The Chair of Timber Structures and Building Construction, as part of the Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), is one of Europe’s leading research institutes in the field of building with wood. Teaching and research topics are timber engineering, fire engineering as well as energy and resource efficient prefabricated timber structures, life cycle engineering and added manufacturing. It is chairing COST Action FP1402 as well as CEN/TC 250/SC 5, the standard committee responsible for Eurocode 5. The Chair has a strong background in transdisciplinary design approaches (architecture, e.g. Prof. Hermann Kaufman, structural engineering and building physics, e.g. Prof. Thomas Auer) and development of innovative design solutions. TUM will lead WP5 since it developed thermal activation for CLT panels and features a strong background in wooden building components, building physics and HVAC systems. TUM will also contribute to WP2 (testing of components and joints) and WP6 (structural design).
